Dolichogenidea appellator

General description:

The following are unpublished notes taken by Jose Fernandez-Triana after studying 1 ♀ (Russia), 2 ♂ (Russia and Tunicia) deposited in the Naturhistorisches Museum of Vienna, Austria.

Color black, except for palpi, tegula, basal half of the wing base, profemur, basal half of meso and metafemora, protibia, basal half of meso and metatibia, pro and mesotarsi, basal 1/3 of metatarsus which are yellow; and mandibles orange-yellow. Forewing with stigma white-yellow in male, same in female but with center pale brown; most of veins transparent, except for r, 2R, RS. Mesoscutum appearance smooth though it has shallow punctures separated for a distance equal or slightly less than its diameter (except near the area anterior to the scutellar sulcus). Scutellar lunules triangular, about 0.6 x lateral face height. Scutellar sulcus very narrow (0.05 x scutellum length) and with ~18-20 carine. Scutellum without posterior-medial band of rugosity; scutellum with punctures that are shallower and sparser than those of mesoscutum. Mesopleura and metapleura almost completely smooth (mesopleura with some punctures along the anterior margin, metapleura with some punctures in the apical lower half). Propodeum mostly unsculptured and smooth, with spare and shallow punctuires. Areola defined by a band of rugosity arising from the nucha and reaching almost to half of propodeum length. Tergite 1 laterally arched, with a basal depression, almost smooth (few punctures posterolaterally near apex), rectangular, its length 1.2 x its width at apex. T2 transverse, almost completely smooth (a few, shallow, sparse puncture), basal margin straight, apical slightly convex (thus shape of tergite would be like many Apanteles/Dolichogenidea in the Neartic). Ovipositor sheats 0.7 x metatibia length. Based on the vannal lobe –which is medially flattened and without setae- this species would actually belong to Apanteles (but need more study to clarify this issue).
